The Assemblyman for Damfa Electoral Area and a self-styled businessman have been charged for allegedly selling meters belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

The accused persons, Charles Kotie, 44 and Foster Moore, 45, were hauled before an Accra Circuit Court.

The duo pleaded not guilty to two counts of intentionally interfering with ECG’s meter distribution system and having in possession of the stolen property.

Per the facts, the complainant in the case is a former ECG staff Kwame Agyemag Badu, who owns a shop in East Legon, which is under renovation.

On March 1, 2023, Moore approached Badu’s caretaker with ECG meters for sale. The caretaker then informed the complainant, who contacted the first accused (Foster Moore) for one.

According to the prosecution, the complainant informed ECG Legal and Prosecution Unit about the first accused’s activities.

The first accused later brought the ECG meter with serial number 141186697 to the complainant to buy, and the complainant seized the opportunity and arranged for his arrest.

The prosecution said the meter was retrieved from him, and he was cautioned to that effect.

According to the prosecution, during the investigation, the first accused led the police to Damfa and pointed the second accused (Charles Kotie) as the one who sold the ECG meter to him for GHC400,00.

“It was also revealed that first and second accused persons had been selling ECG meters around Damfa, Adenta, and East Legon and assisting their buyers to install them,” the prosecution said.

On March 20, 2023, the first accused started sending the complainant threatening messages on WhatsApp that “he will deal with him, and that selling of ECG meters that make clients pay less is his business and if he does not know, he also sells pistols so the complainant should be careful with him”.

The prosecution said, “When the second accused person was asked where he got the ECG meter from, he mentioned one Atigah, but he could not lead police to the said Atigah”.

After investigation, the accused persons were charged with the offences and arraigned before the court.

The two are currently on bail of GHc10,000 each. The case continues on April 27, 2023.
