Aspiring nurse among those killed in Denase ambush
The community of Denase in the Afigya Kwabre North District of the Ashanti Region is reeling in shock and mourning after a devastating armed attack on Thursday night claimed two lives and left three others injured.
Among the victims was Peggy Ayelbassah, a bright and ambitious young woman whose life was tragically cut short just as she stood on the threshold of a promising career in healthcare.
Peggy was en route to Salaga for an admission interview at a nursing training college when she was fatally shot.
The heartbreaking news was confirmed by the area’s Member of Parliament, Collins Adomako-Mensah, who shared his condolences in a somber Facebook post.
He revealed that Peggy had reached out to him via WhatsApp only a day before her death, an interaction that has made her passing even more painful for him and the entire community.
According to eyewitnesses, the attack unfolded late Thursday night when unidentified gunmen opened fire on a vehicle traveling through Denase.
The area was thrown into chaos as the sound of gunshots rang out, causing widespread panic among residents.
Three others who sustained injuries during the shooting are currently receiving treatment at Offinso Saint Patrick Hospital. Medical personnel are closely monitoring their conditions.
Local leaders suspect that the attack may have been targeted rather than a random act of violence.
Kwabena Asamoah, the Unit Committee Chairman for the Denase Electoral Area, told reporters, “This didn’t seem like a robbery. It looked like they knew exactly who they were after. The nature of the shooting suggests it was premeditated”.
This incident has reignited fear and anxiety in Denase, a community that has faced similar violent episodes in recent years.
Residents are now urgently appealing for enhanced security measures and immediate intervention from law enforcement to protect lives and restore peace.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has launched an investigation and pledged to bring those responsible to justice.
