Ashanti Regional Youth Network launches peace campaign
The Ashanti Regional Youth Network has commenced a campaign to ensure incident-free general elections on December 7, 2020.
The project aims at educating young people to exercise their civic responsibility in the upcoming elections without being used as agents of violence.
It is supported by the Foundation for Security and Development in Africa (FOSDA) and OXFAM Ghana.
The campaign is directly linked to the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16 with emphasis on peace, justice and strong institutions.
It involves a series of sensitisation programmes on radio and other communication channels.
Some of the radio stations on board are Akoma and Edubiaseman FM.
The network will visit other radio stations to ensure that the message of peace reaches the majority of the young people in the region.
Discussions on peace include how violence affects society, education, health, gender and community development, among others.
As part of the series of radio engagements, political parties, the NCCE and the National Peace Council would be engaged.
Convenor of the Ashanti Regional Youth Network, Mr Samuel Gariba explained on Edubiaseman FM, socio-economic problems do not have political strings hence the need for everyone to get involved.
He believes that some unpatriotic individuals may make attempts to recruit the youth to foment violence due to their vulnerability.
Because of that, he entreated the youth to be wary of such traps that only satisfy the interest of a small group of politicians.
The network is made up of various youths in the region, and their main objective is to advocate for the general wellbeing of young people and their participation in decision-making.
