Ashanti Region Jurors End Strike After Chief Justice Intervention

Jurors in the Ashanti Region have called off their strike after a meeting with Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo.

The jurors abandoned courts in the region over unpaid allowances, disrupting legal proceedings, including cases of murder and other high-profile cases.

Despite receiving payment for three months out of the arrears for 13 months, the jurors refused to resume work, stating that the money was insufficient.

They have, however, agreed to return to their duty on Monday, 20th November 2023, following a meeting with the Chief Justice.

The Chief Justice stated that she was compelled to urgently meet with the aggrieved jurors following reports highlighting their plight, despite pre-existing plans for the meeting in Kumasi.

“Certain jurors are indeed working in more than one court, and I don’t even know how that should happen in the first place because the juror system is not meant to be a standard, but allowances in the public sector come late, and we need to take steps to ensure it does not overly delay.

“Come to work on Monday, and I am going to ensure that your allowances are paid in November and also ensure that the allowances stop delaying,” Justice Torkornoo assured.

The Foreman General for the jurors in Ashanti Region, Mr Albert Ackah, promised they would resume work on Monday and expressed gratitude to the Chief Justice for her intervention.
