Ashanti NPP MPs demand action on rising fire outbreaks

The Ashanti Region Parliamentary Caucus of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is calling for immediate and decisive government intervention following the troubling surge in fire outbreaks that have left countless businesses devastated across the region.

In a strongly worded statement, the caucus expressed deep concern after the latest inferno ravaged a building near Kumasi’s Old Central Market, destroying multiple shops and threatening the livelihoods of scores of traders and business owners.

While extending heartfelt sympathies to those affected by the tragedy, the caucus emphasised the urgent need for practical solutions to prevent further destruction and economic losses.

“This latest fire is yet another in a disturbing pattern of incidents that continue to plague the Ashanti Region in 2025,” the statement noted. “In February, a fire at Suame Magazine destroyed 25 spare parts shops and 34 vehicles, inflicting significant financial hardship on local businesses.”

The statement further highlighted a string of recent disasters, including two separate fires at the Kwadaso Wood Market in January that reduced dozens of shops and warehouses to ashes.

In March, a fire swept through Konongo Mining Stores, destroying several businesses, followed just days later by a large-scale blaze at Adum—one of Kumasi’s busiest commercial districts.

The caucus raised serious concerns over the Ghana National Fire Service’s (GNFS) capacity to respond effectively to such emergencies, citing a lack of modern firefighting equipment, inadequate water supply infrastructure, and limited personnel as major challenges hampering response efforts.

Calling on the Minister for the Interior to take urgent action, the caucus demanded a full-scale investigation into the recurring fires and the immediate implementation of preventive measures.

“The government must urgently prioritize equipping the Ghana National Fire Service with the tools, technology, and personnel needed to respond swiftly and effectively to such disasters,” the statement urged.

Given the Ashanti Region’s strategic importance as an economic hub, the caucus stressed that continued fire incidents pose a serious threat to local livelihoods and national economic stability.

“The people of Ashanti cannot continue to suffer repeated devastation without a concrete and coordinated government response,” the statement emphasised.

Reaffirming their commitment to the welfare of affected communities, the caucus pledged to keep pressing for swift and effective government action.

“We stand in solidarity with all those impacted by these fires, and we will not relent until comprehensive measures are taken to protect lives, properties, and businesses across the Ashanti Region,” the statement concluded.
