The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has called for the Bank of Ghana to be protected from political interference, stressing that the central bank’s independence is vital to its credibility and to the country’s economic stability.
He made the appeal during a courtesy visit to the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Johnson Asiama, on Wednesday, January 7, 2026.
Describing the Bank of Ghana as a key national institution whose decisions affect every Ghanaian, the Asantehene urged political actors to act with restraint and avoid actions that could undermine the bank’s integrity.
He noted that the central bank should remain neutral and insulated from political pressures, warning that any attempt to draw it into partisan conflicts could weaken public confidence in the institution.
The Asantehene also appealed to leaders across the political divide to give the Governor and his team the space, respect, and support they need to carry out their duties professionally and independently.
He expressed confidence in the leadership of the Bank of Ghana, saying he believes the institution is capable of fulfilling its mandate and contributing to national economic stability and growth if allowed to operate without undue interference.
