The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, will resume his role as mediator in the ongoing Bawku conflict from April 28 to May 1, 2025, according to a statement from the Manhyia Palace.

The announcement, issued on Tuesday, April 15, called for full cooperation from all parties involved.

“Asantehene requests all stakeholders to cooperate for us to find a lasting peace in Bawku,” the statement read.

The renewed mediation effort comes in the wake of recent violent clashes in Bawku between local youth and security personnel.

These confrontations led to multiple injuries, the loss of lives, and the vandalism of properties, including a private residence linked to the Majority Leader.

The situation has escalated tensions in the area once again, raising national concern over the fragile peace and the impact on civilians and law enforcement alike.

President John Mahama, who has been vocal about the need for peace in the region, confirmed last week that the Otumfuo-led mediation would soon resume.

Speaking at a Ghana Military Academy graduation on April 11, he noted that prior discussions in Kumasi had already laid the groundwork for reconciliation.

“We have triggered the Otumfuo mediation process, which saw all stakeholders participate in discussions in Kumasi on a roadmap towards peace. I am assured by the Asantehene that the process will commence next week when he returns from his brief visit abroad,” he said.

Referring to the most recent outbreak of violence, he added: “Only two days ago, an incident in a marketplace triggered an unfortunate loss of lives and criminal vandalism of properties. I wish to emphasise that nobody gains from this situation of conflict and insecurity.”
