Asantehene set to deliver final ruling on Bawku peace talks today

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, is expected to bring months of mediation to a close today as he presents his final ruling on the long-standing Bawku conflict.

The announcement will be delivered at the Manhyia Palace, where various delegations have gathered with cautious hope that the long-troubled municipality may soon find a path to peace.

President John Dramani Mahama tasked the Asantehene earlier this year with leading renewed efforts to resolve the decades-old conflict.

This fresh push began in April when Otumfuo invited representatives from the rival factions to Manhyia for three days of dialogue aimed at rebuilding trust and opening space for honest discussion.

The talks faced a brief pause but resumed on May 13, allowing both sides to continue sharing their concerns and aspirations for a future without fear.

For many people in Bawku, the dispute is more than a political disagreement. It has shaped everyday life for years, creating an atmosphere of anxiety where movement is often restricted, and families worry for their safety.

Sporadic attacks have repeatedly shattered calm in the area, claiming lives, disrupting livelihoods and weakening the bonds that once held communities together.

According to the Manhyia Palace, today’s meeting brings an intensive period of consultation to an end. Residents who have lived through years of tension say they are ready for a turning point.

National observers and local families alike are watching closely, hopeful that the Asantehene’s final decision will open the door to reconciliation and lasting stability.
