Asamoah Gyan to miss Legon Cities’ league opener against Berekum Chelsea
Ghana Premier League club Legon Cities is set to miss the services of striker Asamoah Gyan in their season opener against Berekum Chelsea at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Head coach of Legon Cities, Goran Barjktarevic has confirmed that Gyan has been ruled out of action due to injury.
In a pre-match update on the club’s website, Goran said that the coaching team is working with Gyan to get him fit but the game against Chelsea is too soon for him.
“Asamoah Gyan is one experienced player and he’s still got some problems with injury.” Head Coach Barjaktarevic said.
“We are working to get him fit because it is very important when he comes back, he comes back in good shape”.
The general captain of the Black Stars made a return to the Ghana Premier League after seventeen years of plying his trade in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.
His move to Legon Cities for an undisclosed fee has generated huge excitement with many hoping it will help revive the image of Ghana Football at the local level, and also attract sponsorship.
The Royals struggled for goals last season, scoring just 12 goals in 15 games making them the fourth-lowest scorers in the truncated league.
The Accra based team will be relying on the former Sunderland striker for goals this season.
Gyan, 34 is the all-time leading goalscorer of the Ghana national team, with 51 goals out of 109 appearances.
He is yet to feature in a competitive football since the beginning of the year when he returned to the country after sustaining an injury while playing for his former club NorthEast United.
