Asamoah Gyan, Ghana’s all-time leading scorer with 51 goals, was thrilled to learn that Spanish-Ghanaian rising star Nico Williams considers him a childhood idol.

Williams, a 22-year-old winger for Athletic Club in La Liga, has gained recognition for his outstanding performances, including his contributions to Spain’s UEFA Euro win, where he scored three goals, including one in the final against England.

During a recent visit to Ghana, Williams revealed his admiration for Gyan in an interview with TV3, leaving the Ghana legend deeply honored and humbled by the recognition from one of Europe’s most promising young talents.

Gyan enthusiastically acknowledged the significance of being named as an idol by Williams, highlighting the importance of inspiring the next generation of footballers.

“I felt very happy when Nico Williams said he idolizes me because it shows that people are starting to recognize what we did for the nation during our time,” Gyan said. “Nico had a great tournament and is one of the most promising players in the world, attracting interest from top clubs. I am delighted by the remarks he gave me.”

Gyan’s reaction underscores the impact he continues to have on the sport and the inspiration he provides to the next generation of footballers.

While Nico Williams has suddenly risen to be a key player for La Roja, his elder brother Inaki Williams has switched allegiance to Ghana and has played some games for the four-time Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) champions.
