Asamoah Gyan names 2010 as the best footballing year in his career

Former captain of the Black Stars, Asamoah Gyan, has declared 2010 as the standout year of his football career.

Gyan played a crucial role in the Black Stars’ journey during the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, where the team reached the quarter-finals for the first time in history, narrowly missing a semi-final berth after a missed penalty.

In an interview with 3Xtra TV, Gyan reflected on his career, emphasizing that, despite his successful stints with top European clubs and the national team, 2010 holds a special significance for him.

He shared some light-hearted memories from the Black Stars camp, mentioning, “2010 was a special year for me in my career.”

Everything worked. In the 2010 Black Stars squad, the funniest was Kwadwo Asamoah, and I was the one who always reported late. Richard Kingston always reported on time and was mostly found praying,” he added.

Gyan’s contributions included vital goals throughout the tournament, but he notably missed a crucial penalty against Uruguay that could have propelled the team into the semi-finals.

As the all-time leading goalscorer for Ghana and Africa’s top scorer in FIFA World Cup history, Gyan’s legacy in football is firmly established.

He officially announced his retirement from professional football on June 20, 2024, at the age of 37.
