A terrifying armed robbery incident has left a player of Berekum Chelsea dead after the team’s bus was ambushed on their return journey from Samreboi to Berekum after their match against FC Samartex 1996.

According to an official statement from the club, the team encountered a group of heavily armed robbers who had blocked the road to halt their movement.

The assailants, described as masked men wielding guns and assault rifles, reportedly opened fire on the bus as the driver attempted to reverse to safety.

The sudden attack forced players and technical staff to abandon the vehicle and flee into nearby bushes for cover, in a desperate attempt to escape the gunfire. Amid the chaos, one player, Dominic Frimpong, who joined the team on loan from Aduana FC, sustained gunshot injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital.

The club confirmed that the injured player was later transferred to the Bibiani Government hospital.

In a police statement, player Dominic Frimpong unfortunately passed away while receiving treatment. Another victim, George Owusu Afriyie, 52, was also robbed of GHS 4,500.00 and two used BB cartridges were retrieved from the scene to assist investigations.

The incident has sparked concern over the safety of teams travelling across the country for league matches, as a similar incident happened in the 2023/24 league season when Legon Cities FC was attacked on the same Bibiani-Goaso road, which left one of their players seriously injured.

While details of the attackers and their motives remain unclear, the swift intervention of a police patrol team helped to stabilise the situation and ensure the safety of the remaining team members.

Berekum Chelsea expressed deep gratitude to the police for their rapid response, as well as to sports journalists who quickly shared information about the incident.

The club also acknowledged the support of the residents of Ashiresu, who provided temporary shelter to the shaken players and staff in the aftermath of the attack.
