The 29 protestors arrested in connection to the violence that erupted during the Arise Ghana demonstration will be arraigned on Monday, 4 July 2022.
They will be on a provisional charge of offensive conduct and the destruction of public property.
The police administration, who made this known in a statement, explained that “the Martyrs Day celebrations made it difficult for the suspects to be arraigned before the court on Thursday, 30 June”, hence the bail.
“Therefore, in line with the constitutional provision of not keeping suspects beyond 48 hours, they were granted bail and will be arraigned on Monday,” the statement read.
It will be recalled that the 29 protestors of Arise Ghana, arrested on Tuesday for their involvement in the chaos during the demonstration, were granted police inquiry bail on Thursday.
According to the police, 26 of them have been able to meet their bail conditions and have been released.
However, the remaining three are still going through the process of satisfying their bail conditions for their release.
Background
On Tuesday, 28 June 2022, the pressure group, Arise Ghana took to the streets to protest economic hardships in the country.
The first day of the protest was marred by chaotic scenes resulting in the arrest of some 29 persons concerning the bloody violence that erupted.
The police said available video footage of the event is being reviewed, and all other persons identified for taking part in the attacks and inciting the violence will be arrested and brought to face justice.
The protesters also vandalised property, including police buses and burnt car tyres in the middle of the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange.
But, Wednesday’s demonstration saw a calculated effort by all factions to avoid any chaotic instances and drum home their message of the suffering Ghanaians.
The group handed petitions to the Ministry of Finance and Ghana’s Parliament House at the end of the demonstration.
