Appiah guides war-ravaged Sudan to frustrating draw against Senegal

Despite the domestic turmoil in their home country, the Sudan national team, led by Ghanaian coach James Kwesi Appiah, demonstrated impressive resilience by achieving a goalless draw against Senegal in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match on Saturday.

The game took place at the Martyrs of February Stadium in Benghazi, Libya, where Sudan maintained their unbeaten streak and solidified their position at the top of Group B.

Due to security concerns in Sudan, Appiah’s team played away from home but managed to defy the odds against a star-studded Senegalese side featuring players like Sadio Mane.

The Falcons of Jediane showcased a determined defensive performance, effectively neutralizing their more-fancied opponents with a well-organized structure and calculated counterattacks.

Although Senegal, the heavy favorites, dominated possession and created numerous scoring opportunities, Sudan’s solid defense and goalkeeper Mohamed Mustafa’s remarkable saves ensured that the match ended in a stalemate.

This result keeps Sudan at the top of the group, highlighting Appiah’s impact on transforming the team into serious contenders for historic World Cup qualification.

With this crucial draw, Sudan has now accumulated eleven points from five matches, sending a clear message to their rivals.

As they continue their qualifying campaign, Appiah’s tactical brilliance and the team’s unwavering determination may lead them to achieve the remarkable feat of qualifying for their first-ever World Cup.
