Some disgruntled members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Sefwi-Wiawso constituency are demanding an apology from the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin.

Their demand comes after the Speaker sacked Sefwi-Wiawso MP Dr Kwaku Afriyie overrude comments.

The incident occurred during a debate on the nomination of two justices to the Supreme Court by President Akufo-Addo.

Speaker Bagbin suggested that the house considers the full complement of the Supreme Court when the Appointments Committee presents its report.

However, Dr Afriyie disagreed, asserting that it was not within the Speaker’s purview to make such comments.

Speaker Bagbin deemed Dr Afriyie’s remarksrudeanddisrespectful, leading to his expulsion from the house.

However, the aggrieved party sympathizers say,The behaviour of the Speaker in this regard is an affront against our MP and people of Sefwi.”

One of the leaders of the protest and also the NPP Constituency Secretary, Atta Marfo, described the Speaker’s action as unfortunate.

“Why would you sack only Dr Kwaku Afriyie from Parliament for expressing himself? Parliament has standing orders. Standing Order 35 gives the Speaker the power to sack someone from the chamber but before he acts on that rule, there are proper procedures. Why did he not follow the appropriate procedures.”

They have, therefore, given the Speaker one week to apologize to their MP and the people of Sefwi-Wiawso.

Failure to render an unqualified apology, the group threatened to take action against the Speaker.
