Any vote for Akua Donkor will be annulled – EC

The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that any votes cast for the Ghana Freedom Party’s (GFP) candidate, Akua Donkor, in the December polls will be annulled.

Dr. Bossman Asare, Deputy Chairman of the EC in charge of Corporate Services, confirmed this during an appearance on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, November 16.

He clarified that while Akua Donkor’s image and name will appear on the presidential ballot paper, any votes for her will be rejected.

“Now we know we have 12 candidates, so any vote for Akua Donkor would be annulled. It is not possible for her to win,” Dr. Asare stated.

According to him, the EC is actively educating the public on the matter to minimize invalid votes.

This clarification follows the disqualification of Philip Appiah Kubi, another candidate from the GFP, leaving Akua Donkor’s presence on the ballot paper as a procedural matter.

EC Chairperson Jean Mensa explained during an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting on November 12 that the ballot order will remain unchanged despite the disqualification.

“The printing of presidential ballots is already 90 percent complete,” Ms. Mensa noted, adding that retaining the current structure avoids unnecessary delays.
