Ankobra town submerged after river overflows its banks

The Ankobra community in the Ellembelle District of the Western Region has flooded after River Ankobra overflowed its banks.

This has destroyed over 100 houses and several properties, leaving residents displaced.

Some residents have taken refuge in classrooms and churches in the area.

According to the Assembly member for Ankobra Electoral Area, Patrick Assuah, the river would normally overflow its banks any time someone drowns in it or dies in the estuary where the river enters the sea.

However, he explained that Tuesday’s incident was unusual.

He added that when the water entered the community, most residents had to run for their lives as some valuables were washed away.

“But what happened yesterday was strange because we have not heard about anybody drowning in the river or the sea.

“Now the people are living in fear because they suspect that with the onset of the rains, the situation could be worse,” he stated.

He said that the assembly was working with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to implement measures to provide the needed assistance to the victims.

According to him, NADMO has entreated the victims to move to higher ground or seek shelter with relatives in other locations to avert danger.

Meanwhile, some of the residents have blamed the situation partly on the activities of illegal miners who are pushing the water into the community.
