Amin Adam slams NDC over ‘PR’ gimmicks on energy debt payments

Former Finance Minister Dr Mohammed Amin Adam has criticised the NDC government for what he describes as excessive public relations over routine fiscal responsibilities, particularly the payment of energy sector debts.

Dr Amin Adam argued that the government’s announcement of a US$1.4 billion payment towards energy sector obligations is being portrayed as a major achievement, even though similar payments were made by the previous administration without public fanfare.

According to him, such payments are not new and should not be framed as a special intervention by the current government.

“The NDC government turns everything into PR. Paying US$1.4 billion in energy sector debts is not new,” he stated, stressing that debt payments are a normal part of responsible public financial management, not a political milestone.

Dr Amin Adam further noted that official government records contradict the narrative being promoted.

He referenced the 2025 Budget, presented by the NDC government itself, which shows that the previous NPP administration paid US$1.4 billion towards energy sector debts in 2024 without making public claims about it.

He emphasised that these figures are already documented in budget statements laid before Parliament.

The Karaga MP urged the government to prioritise transparency, consistency, and long-term solutions to the challenges facing the energy sector, rather than what he described as propaganda.

He also warned that selectively presenting information could mislead the public and undermine an objective assessment of economic management across successive governments.
