AMA to temporarily close busy stretch of Kwame Nkrumah avenue
The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has announced a temporary closure of a section of Kwame Nkrumah Avenue in the Central Business District (CBD) to allow for essential repair works.
According to a statement signed by the Head of Public Affairs, Gilbert Nii Ankrah, on behalf of the Chief Executive Officer, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, the closure will begin at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday and end at 12:00 a.m. on Sunday.
The affected stretch includes the U-turn near Lava and the portion of the road between the Derby Avenue/Kwame Nkrumah Avenue intersection and the Selwyn Market Street/Kwame Nkrumah Avenue intersection.
The AMA explained that this action has become necessary due to the development of severe depressions and potholes along the road, which are obstructing the free flow of traffic and posing serious safety risks to motorists and pedestrians.
The repair works are intended to address these hazards and restore the road to a safer and more efficient condition.
During the closure, motorists are advised to use alternative routes and adhere to traffic management measures that will be put in place to ensure public safety and minimize disruptions.
Directional signs will be installed, and officers from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service will be deployed to manage traffic and assist road users.
The statement also noted that once the initial sectional repairs are completed, paving works will follow to improve the road’s durability and overall condition.
The AMA called for public cooperation and patience as these urgent improvements are carried out to enhance safety and traffic flow in the city.
“The AMA deeply regrets any inconvenience the temporary closure may cause and appeals to all road users and residents to cooperate as the Assembly works to improve road infrastructure, enhance mobility, and promote safer and more efficient transportation within the city,” the release added.
