Interior Minister nominee Alhaji Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak has vowed to prioritise equipping police officers with body cameras to enhance accountability and public trust in law enforcement.
During his vetting on Friday, January 24, Alhaji Muntaka outlined his vision to implement a policy mandating all police personnel to wear and activate body cameras while on duty.
He highlighted the ongoing public outcry over incidents of police misconduct, which have eroded confidence in law enforcement.
To address these concerns, he emphasised the importance of body cameras to ensure transparency and professionalism.
“We will ensure that every police officer stepping out on duty is equipped with a body camera. This will eliminate ambiguity and expose any misconduct. Whether it’s extortion, brutality, or other actions, the body camera will record everything, leaving no room for doubt,” he explained.
Mr. Muntaka also noted that the leadership of security agencies had acknowledged the challenges and expressed their commitment to addressing them.
He stressed his determination to enforce adherence to this initiative.
“We must do everything to uphold professionalism in our police force. The only way to remove doubts and ensure accountability is by requiring body cameras and enforcing strict compliance,” he stated.
