Aliu Mahama’s Wife Was Intelligent, Motherly, Devoid of Scandals – Kufuor pays last respect
Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has eulogized the late Ramatu Aliu Mahama, wife of former Vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama.
The late Hajia Ramatu was the Second Lady for eight years, during which Mr Kufuor was Ghana’s president from 2000 to 2008.
Former President Kufuor described her as “very gracious, intelligent and motherly and was aware of the weight of the office in which she discharged duties with such excellence”.
Notably, the ex-president extolled Hajia Ramatu for being “a good human being”.
“There were no scandals, atleast from her quarters,” he poured praises on the woman who passed away on Thursday.
Former President Kufuor paid tribute while speaking at an Islamic funeral ceremony at the Independence Square in Accra to bid farewell to the former Second Lady.
“She was thoughtful and supported her husband, who was Vice President during my time in government. She was a great hostess any time we travelled in the north, especially around Tamale,” he added.
She was laid in state in a casket draped in the national colours of red, gold and green after military pallbearers escorted the funeral hearse to the venue.
The National Chief Imam led an Islamic prayer for the former Second Lady.
The casket was later flown to Tamale by the Ghana Airforce for final interment.
Hajia Ramatu, who would have turned 71 on 15 October 2022, had been battling a heart-related sickness for about two years.
The late wife of the former Vice President was an educationist in Tamale.
Due to her love and care for her pupils, she earned the coveted title ‘Mma Ramatu’ or ‘Mother Ramatu’.
Hajia Ramatu was the daughter of the late Imoro Egala, a Minister for Trade and Industry and the first black chairman of COCOBOD in the First Republic.
Imoro Egala was a long-standing political stalwart in Ghana through to the Third Republic, doubling as a founder of the PNP, now PNC.
The late Hajia Ramatu Mahama left behind four children, namely: Salma Mahama, MP for Yendi Farouk Mahama , Fayad Mahama, and Halim Mahama.
