The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) says former Trade Minister, Alan Kyerematen’s decision to resign from the party was premeditated.
According to the NPP, Mr Kyerematen failed to engage party executives ahead of his announcement on Monday in Accra.
In a press briefing on Tuesday, September 26, the General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Frimpong Koduah said, “The disappointing part is the mode in which he resigned from the party, which was through a press conference, without prior notice to the party. The party wants to believe that his decision to hold a press conference to resign, without first informing the party, suggests that he made a pre-meditated irrevocable decision to resign from the party.
“It pre-emphasizes that when the Chairman of the party, [Stephen Ntim], on behalf of the party had a meeting with him after the August delegates conference in an attempt to bring all the ten aspirants together, he didn’t portray any sign of resigning from the party, let alone going independent.
Mr Kodua added “The NPP acknowledge Mr Kyerematen’s contributions to our party’s growth and development over the years. We respect his decision and extend our gratitude for the services rendered to the NPP and mother Ghana.”
Mr Kyerematen on Monday, September 25, 2023, announced his resignation from the party and his intention to contest the 2024 polls as an Independent Presidential Candidate in Accra.
This follows the decision of the former minister to withdraw from the presidential race of the NPP.
This is the second time Mr. Kyerematen has quit the NPP.
After losing in the 2007 presidential primary and what he subsequently described as being sidelined, Alan, in 2008, resigned from the NPP in a similar move but was politically coerced and later rejoined the party.
