The New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful Alan Kyerematen has made a cash donation of GH₵100,000 to support victims of the Kumasi Kejetia Market fire.
The former Trade and Industry Minister made the presentation when he visited the place on Friday, March 24.
“I sympathize with all of you in this unfortunate moment. As traders, your concerns affect all Ghanaians. We are, however, grateful that no lives were lost,” he said.
He also made an appeal for the expedited completion of phase two of the Kejetia market which has been suspended because of the country’s ongoing domestic debt exchange programme.
“If phase two of this market is not completed, it will be a big inconvenience to all traders. I, therefore, implore the government to speed up efforts to enable the contractor to come back to work on the project as soon as possible,” he added.
He urged the traders to respect fire safety protocols to avoid the recurrence of similar disasters in the future.
A representative of the market queen, Nana Sakina, expressed her gratitude to the NPP flagbearer hopeful while praying for God’s blessings and favour for him.
It will be recalled that an inferno consumed parts of the Kejetia Market in the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, March 15, 2023, destroying over 30 shops out of the facility’s 8,000 shops.
This led the managers to close the area for some days to allow security officials to check the structural integrity of the affected building.
