Akwatia by-election: NPP endorses Kwame Asumadu as candidate

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially announced its endorsement of Solomon Kwame Asumadu, the CEO of Owuo Mining Company, as the candidate for the upcoming Akwatia by-election.

This announcement was made by the Eastern Regional Chairman of the NPP, Jeff Konadu Addo, during a press briefing held in Parliament on Monday, July 28, 2025.

Addo explained that the decision came after thorough discussions with party stakeholders, where a proposal for a primary was widely rejected in favour of selecting a candidate through consensus.

“We commissioned research and gathered the names of all individuals who had expressed interest in contesting. After evaluating the findings, it was clear that Solomon Kwame Asumadu stood out as the most suitable candidate,” he noted.

He also indicated that the findings from the research were presented to the party’s National Council, which subsequently endorsed Asumadu’s candidacy.

“Today marks the official announcement of Kwame Asumadu as the NPP’s candidate for the Akwatia by-election,” he said.

The Electoral Commission has scheduled the by-election for September 2, 2025, to fill the parliamentary seat left vacant by the passing of the former MP, Ernest Kumi.

Meanwhile, three people have submitted their nomination forms to compete in the upcoming National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primaries for the Akwatia Constituency by-election.

Among the candidates are former Member of Parliament Henry Boakye, current NDC Akwatia Constituency Secretary Bernard Bediako Baidoo, and Erasmus Koney Ali.

According to the party’s schedule, these candidates, along with any others who file their nominations by the deadline on Wednesday, July 30, will be vetted on Thursday, July 31, 2025.
