Akwatia by-election: IGP promises more security for vote counting
Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has assured the public that the Ghana Police Service is fully prepared to maintain peace and security throughout the Akwatia by-election, especially during the crucial counting and collation stages.
Speaking to the media during a tour of the constituency on Tuesday, September 2, Dr. Yohuno expressed confidence in the security arrangements in place and emphasised that additional reinforcements would be deployed if needed to ensure a smooth and credible process.
“It will be well. You’ve seen the calm already, and that’s how it will continue. During the counting, more reinforcements will come in. The robust ones will also be deployed,” he stated.
His assurance follows reports of minor disturbances at some polling centres earlier in the day.
Despite these incidents, the IGP maintained that the overall situation remains calm and under control, attributing it to the professionalism and swift response of police officers on the ground.
The by-election, triggered by the passing of the sitting Member of Parliament, is taking place across 119 polling stations, with over 50,000 registered voters expected to cast their ballots.
Security has been visibly strengthened in key areas, including Wenchi and Vawaso, to prevent any escalation of tensions.
The Electoral Commission is expected to begin counting votes immediately after polls close, with final results anticipated later tonight.
