Akufo-Addo won’t pay depositors locked-up funds in 2020
Flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama has emphatically said that the Akufo-Addo government won’t pay depositors’ locked-up funds in 2020.
Mr Mahama argues that President Akufo-Addo can only pay off depositors in 2024.
“The President has said he will pay depositors in full, that is not going to happen in 2020. If the government will pay that money, it is going to be spread out over the next four years. Depositors cannot sit and think that this year they are going to get the money, ” he said in a Facebook live series on Thursday.
Mr Mahama made reference to President Akufo-Addo’s Christmas message about paying off depositors’ funds in the defunct banks.
According to him, this promise is vague and represents one of the many promises that the government has failed to fulfill.
“…if I may ask, on which foundation was the President’s message anchored? Mr Mahama quizzed.
“Note that the President in his Christmas message was very emphatic that all depositors will receive their locked-up funds in the defunct banks in full, ” he recounted.
“Was it just a vague promise, if that is the case, it defeats the confidence that people have in our political systems,” he added.
He further argued that if the Akufo-Addo government cannot add to the gain then it should not be allowed to subtract from the gains.
He was however quick to add that unlike the Akufo-Addo-NPP government, the NDC will pay depositors in full should they come back come 2020.
