Akufo-Addo releases GH¢900,000 Covid-19 relief package to clubs

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has ordered the release of GH¢900,000 to be paid to Ghana’s 18 Premier League clubs.

A statement from the Ministry of Youth and Sports released on Friday, December 4 said the amount is “to offset some of their expenses in this era of COVID-19 pandemic.”

According to the Sports Ministry, each club will receive an amount of GH¢50,000 which is expected to bring relief to the clubs especially as matches are currently being played behind closed doors to minimize the risk of COVID-19 spread.

“The President of the Republic, H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has authorized the Ministry of Youth and Sports to release an amount of nine hundred thousand cedis (GH¢900,000) as a first tranche of payment to support the 19 Premier League clubs to offset some of their expenses in this era of COVID-19 pandemic. Each club is to receive an amount of fifty thousand Ghana cedis (GH¢ 50,000),” the statement said.

The Sports Ministry said the Division one league, National Women’s League, CAF Champion’s League Representative, and CAF Confederation Cup Representative will also receive financial support “in due course.”
