Akufo-Addo mourns former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga
Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Kenya’s former Prime Minister, Raila Amolo Odinga, who died in India on Tuesday, October 14, 2025.
In a Facebook post, the former president described Mr. Odinga as a “great son of Africa” and a close personal friend whose death has been met with widespread grief across the continent.
“I extend my deepest condolences to the people of the great sister nation of Kenya, President William Samoei Ruto, and to the family of the late Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga,” Mr Akufo-Addo wrote.
He recalled his long-standing friendship with Mr. Odinga, noting that they shared a common vision for promoting democracy, good governance, and human rights in Africa.
“Prime Minister Odinga and I shared deep convictions and mutual values on strengthening democracy and advancing the human rights of Africa’s citizens,” he added.
Akufo-Addo fondly remembered Mr. Odinga’s presence at his presidential inauguration in January 2017, describing him as one of the distinguished African leaders who graced the ceremony.
He also revealed Ghana’s firm support for Mr. Odinga’s 2024 bid for the African Union Commission Chairperson, which saw both President William Ruto and Mr. Odinga visit Accra to secure Ghana’s backing.
“As a founding member of the African Union, I pledged Ghana’s support without hesitation,” Mr. Akufo-Addo noted.
Paying tribute to the late Kenyan leader, the former president hailed Mr. Odinga as a “pillar of Kenya’s democracy” whose “remarkable footprints on the nation’s stability and history will never be forgotten”.
