Akufo-Addo encouraged me to the take up Auditor-General appointment – Domelevo recounts

Former Auditor-General, Daniel Yaw Domelevo, has revealed that Nana Akufo-Addo encouraged him to accept the appointment offer from outgoing President John Mahama.

He said he was in two minds about accepting a job offer from a president who had just lost a re-election bid

“In 2016, when I was appointed and I was confused as to whether I should accept or reject, a call came through from Dr. Matthew Opoku-Prempeh, and after greeting me, he said: ‘Hold on for the President-elect’. So, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo encouraged me and said: ‘Go and take the job’. That is why I’m very grateful to him,” he recounted.

“I will like to thank the Catholic Church, His Excellency the former President John Dramani Mahama, who appointed me as the Auditor-General of Ghana. I thank him for the opportunity to serve my motherland, Said Domelevo, at a short Thanksgiving ceremony, at the Christ the King parish in Accra.

“I will also like to thank His Excellency the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, for working with me.

” Anybody who calls him or herself an anti-corruption crusader must first be made to be in a position of influence where corruption can be outrightly expunged from our political culture.” He added.

Barely three years into his appointment Mr. Domelevo was asked  to take an accumulated leave of 123 days, which was later extended to 167 days.

A day before the leave ended, the Audit Service Board ruled that he should have retired on June 1, 2020, due to his age.

Mr Domelevo challenged the claims of the Board of the Audit Service and reported to work.

But a letter from the presidency sided with the Audit Service Board and acknowledged Mr Domelevo’s retirement.

“The attention of the President has been drawn to records and documents made available to his office by the Audit Service, indicating that your date of birth as 1st  June 1960, and in accordance with Article 199 (1) of the constitution, your date of retirement as Auditor General was 1st June 2020”

“The president thanks you for your service to the nation and wishes you the best in your future endeavours,” the letter read.
