President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has signed the Ghana Shippers’ Authority Act, 2024 into law.
This Act, which gained parliamentary approval in July and received presidential assent on October 18, 2024, aims to strengthen the Ghana Shippers’ Authority (GSA)’s regulatory mandate and position Ghana as a competitive and fair hub for commercial shipping.
This new Act empowers the GSA to regulate operations across all modes of transport, including sea, air, and land.
In an official statement dated October 31, 2024, the Ghana Shippers Authority announced that it is now better positioned to drive transparency in pricing, maintain service quality, and establish Ghana as a premier destination for international trade.
The legislation comes at a symbolic moment coinciding with the GSA’s 50th anniversary and reflecting its evolution from the Ghana Shippers’ Council in 1974 to the Ghana Shippers’ Authority in 1998 with a broader mandate.
“The Ghana Shippers’ Authority expresses deep gratitude to all stakeholders for their invaluable contributions toward this legislative milestone,” the GSA noted, emphasizing the role of collaboration in shaping the new Act.
To ensure smooth implementation, the GSA has launched a nationwide sensitization campaign, educating stakeholders about their rights and responsibilities under the Act.
Additionally, the GSA is gathering input for a Legislative Instrument (L.I.) that will aid in operationalizing the Act.
Stakeholders are urged to actively participate in this initiative to help build a sustainable and resilient shipping ecosystem.
