President Akufo-Addo has appointed Dr. Eric Nkansah as the new Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES).
Dr. Nkansah’s appointment takes immediate effect pending the advice of the Governing Council of the GES and the Public Services Commission.
His appointment was contained in a letter issued on Wednesday, October 19 by the Presidency and signed by Nana Bediatuo Asante, Secretary to the President.
“I am pleased to inform you that the President has appointed you to act as the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (the Service) pending receipt of the constitutionally required advice of the Governing Council of the Service, given in consultation with the Public Service Commission,” a portion of the letter read.
Dr. Eric Nkansah has fourteen days to either accept or reject his appointment as the new GES Director-General.
Prior to his appointment, he was the Technical Advisor/Director in charge of Tertiary Education at the Ministry of Education.
Dr. Eric Nkansah has over the last 13 years fervently worked as a banker, lecturer, researcher, and financial consultant. He was a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Banking Technology and Finance of the Kumasi Technical University.
He joined the University in 2012 and has since contributed significantly (in the area of teaching, research, programme development etc) to the development of the University. Before joining the University, he was the Sales Manager at the Krofrom Branch of Barclays Bank of Ghana (now Absa) where he worked for over five years.
This comes at the back of the sacking of the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Prof Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa days ago.
In a letter dated October 17, 2022, the Office of the President announced the termination of Prof. Opoku-Amankwa’s appointment.
According to the letter, his skills are no longer required at the GES.
“The Ministry of Education has informed this Office that the exigencies that required your skills and expertise as Director-General of the Ghana Education Service do not exist any longer”, the letter stated.
Having been appointed in April 2017, a specific reference was made to Prof. Opoku-Amankwa’s secondment in January 2021 from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
