Akosombo Dam spillage: Govt begins construction of first 100 resettlement homes
The Minister of Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has disclosed that the government has commenced the construction of 100 homes for persons affected by the Akosombo Dam spillage.
According to the minister, a sod was cut for the first 100 homes in the Central and North Tongu Districts of the Volta Region on Monday, March 25, 2024.
He added that designated contractors and consultants from the Housing Department of the Ministry will be visiting the site for further work in the coming weeks.
“The first step was to provide relief items and when the water levels receded, victims were helped to return to the communities. 88,000 people were affected and over 5,000 homes were affected, for these persons we need to go through with the collection of their particulars to help in resettling them and it is not just about brick-and-mortar issues, it goes beyond that.
“It is also about schools and reinstating the way of life of the people and so we are going to validate the data that we will collect to ensure their resettlement” he noted in an interview monitored by The Ghana Report on Citi FM.
“We will work with the various assemblies and traditional authorities and we are currently working with them to validate some of the data. We cut sod for 100 homes and we are going to ensure that we do that across the other districts and communities that got affected in the flooding and we will need all the state agencies to come on board.”
The spillage, carried out by the Volta River Authority (VRA) on September 15, 2023, displaced over 27,000 people, according to the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO).
