The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has reassured the public that the Akosombo Dam is not under threat following concerns raised by a viral video showing a bushfire burning in a mountainous terrain nearby.
In a statement issued on Friday, January 17, the GNFS clarified that the fire, which is situated in a hilly area far from the dam, poses no danger to the structure or the surrounding communities.
The GNFS acknowledged that the fire is in a difficult-to-reach terrain, making it challenging for firefighters to access, but emphasised that their personnel are on high alert.
The service assured the public that they were closely monitoring the situation, working alongside local authorities to manage the fire and prevent it from spreading.
“To ensure the safety of the Akosombo Dam and nearby areas, we have stationed personnel around the dam. We are ready to respond swiftly to any developments,” the statement read.
The GNFS further urged the public to remain calm, emphasising that there was no immediate threat to the dam.
As part of its efforts to prevent similar incidents in the future, the GNFS has launched the 2024/2025 Bushfire Prevention Campaign.
The campaign aims to educate the public on effective strategies to prevent bushfires and protect communities.
The GNFS also expressed gratitude for the cooperation shown by the public and reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property.
They continue to work diligently to monitor the fire and ensure the safety of the Akosombo Dam and its surroundings.
