Akatsi: Two persons shot in police clash

Police have shot two community members of Akatsi in the Volta Region in the early hours of Sunday, 10 April 2022.

They were part of a group who massed up at the Akatsi police station to demand the release of a motorcycle impounded by police on Friday.

Reports from the region suggest that the police allegedly hit three persons riding a motor bicycle resulting in the death of one close to the Akatsi Training College.

The police further seized the motorbike and carried it to the police station.

The development is said to have infuriated the youth, who besieged the police station Sunday morning.

The clash resulted in the firing of gunshots by the police, which resulted in two persons being severely injured.

According to the account of an eyewitness, “On Friday night, the police used their car to hit one of the youths around 11 pm, and when they sent him to the district hospital, the person died. This morning, the youth went to the police station to take the motorbike, and the police started fighting with the guys. They shot two of the guys who have been taken to Ho for treatment.”

There is tension in the town as law enforcement agencies make efforts to bring the situation under control.
