The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has expressed appreciation for the Ghana Police Service following the arrest and prosecution of a suspect linked to the murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale.

Daniel Owusu Koranteng, also known as Amakye, was brought before the Madina District Court on Wednesday, March 19, 2025. The court has subsequently placed him in police custody, with a scheduled reappearance on April 1, 2025.

In a statement from General Secretary Kofi Yeboah, the GJA praised this development as a crucial step towards achieving justice for Ahmed Suale, who was tragically murdered on January 16, 2019.

The association commended Inspector-General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno and DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor, the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department, for what they termed a “giant step” in solving the case of the slain journalist.

“For more than six years since the assassination of Ahmed Suale, this is the first time the police have made a significant impact in respect of bringing the suspected killers of the investigative journalist to face justice,” the statement noted.

The GJA recognised that this arrest follows their persistent advocacy for action on the case, reflecting concerns over Ghana’s declining position on the World Press Freedom Index in recent years.

While expressing satisfaction with this recent development, the GJA urged the police to continue their efforts in apprehending all individuals connected to the crime.

“We hope this major breakthrough in the arrest and prosecution of suspect Daniel Owusu Koranteng will only be the beginning of the long search for justice for Ahmed Suale,” the statement added.

The association reaffirmed its commitment to closely monitoring the case and indicated that it would escalate matters to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Community Court of Justice if substantial progress is not seen by the end of March 2025.

Additionally, the GJA is planning a meeting with police leadership to receive updates on this case and other unresolved attacks on journalists, including the case of Joy FM’s Latif Iddrisu, which may also be taken to the ECOWAS Court.

Meanwhile, the GJA has communicated the arrest and ongoing prosecution to its international partners, the Federation of African Journalists (FAJ) and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), both of whom have offered their support and are prepared to escalate the matter to further international forums in pursuit of justice for Ahmed Suale.

Ahmed Suale was an integral member of Anas Aremeyaw Anas’ Tiger Eye PI team and was assassinated in Madina, Accra, after his identity was revealed in a documentary that uncovered corruption within Ghana’s football sector.

He died on Wednesday, January 16, 2019, when unidentified men on motorcycles shot him three times, twice in the chest and once in his neck in his vehicle.
