Ahmed Ibrahim, the Local Government Minister nominee, has vowed to uphold mutual respect and effective communication between legislators and Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to enhance governance.

On Tuesday, January 21, during his vetting by Parliament’s Appointments Committee, Mr. Ibrahim stressed the critical need for fostering cordial relationships between MPs and DCEs.

“I will not allow any DCE to disrespect any Member of Parliament,” he stated firmly. “In the same way, I’ll ensure there is a common platform for smooth communication between MPs and DCEs.”

“Mutual respect and collaboration between MPs and DCEs are essential to advancing the goals of the government and addressing the needs of local communities,” he explained.

The nominee underscored the importance of cooperation between MPs and MMDCEs, highlighting how their collaboration directly impacts the successful implementation of development projects and policies at the local level.

Mr. Ibrahim pointed out incidents where some MMDCEs have deliberately undermined MPs to weaken their electoral chances, as some DCEs aim to contest parliamentary seats themselves.

He emphasised that such conduct is detrimental to governance and development, pledging to address these challenges by fostering an environment of mutual respect and collaboration.

Mr. Ibrahim also proposed the creation of a common platform for dialogue, which he believes will enhance coordination, understanding, and a shared commitment to national development goals.

He concluded by reiterating his dedication to fostering harmonious relationships between MPs and DCEs, seeing this as a cornerstone for improving service delivery and ensuring progress in local governance.
