Agyarko’s wife on her way out of parliament?

A Deputy Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Maame Yaa Aboagye will be challenging incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency, Lydia Alhassan, in the party’s primaries later in the year.

Maame Yaa confirmed to The Ghana Report recently in an interview that she would be contesting the up-coming primaries of the governing party to snatch the sole slot from Lydia Seyram Alhassan, popularly known as Maa Lydia.

“Oh yes! I’m definitely contesting,” she said when asked about her interest in the seat.

Lydia Alhassan, widow of late MP for the area, Emmanuel Kyeremateng Agyarko was elected Member of Parliament for the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency in a bye-election on December 29, 2018.

She polled 12, 041, representing 68.80 per cent of the valid votes cast. Her closest challenger, Mr. Kwasi Delali Brempong of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) polled 5,341 representing 30.52 per cent while Mr. William Kofi Dowokpor of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) and Mr. Clement Boadi of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) polled 102 and 17 of total valid votes representing 0.58 and 0.10 per cent respectively.

Many have argued the incumbent MP is not really known in politics and perhaps is a novice but it is gathered that she has been an integral part of the NPP in the constituency. The interest shown by Maame Yaa Aboagye makes for an interesting spectacle, the party’s primaries in September this year.

Maame Yaa Aboagye is currently a Deputy Director of Communication for the governing party and holds a Master’s Degree in Business Administration and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Health Psychology from the University of Bedfordshire in the United Kingdom. She also attended Irwin College in the UK and had her secondary education at Achimota School here in Ghana.

She is the President and Founding Member of the Patriotic Youth Movement, a volunteer group under the NPP Youth Wing which played a key role in the campaign leading up to the 2016 presidential and parliamentary elections. She was also part of the NPP National Collation Team for the 2016 elections.

  • Her skills in event coordination, conflict resolution, fundraising and resource mobilization makes her a great team leader. She is said to be a committed team player by her close associates with reports suggesting she sometimes dedicates her personal resources for use by the team.

Outside politics, Maame Yaa Aboagye is an entrepreneur with a keen interest in after school programmes for children. This led her to establish the Toffee Kids Arcade in 2011.

She is a Presbyterian who worships with the Victory Congregation, Frafraha branch. She has two beautiful daughters. Her hobbies are cooking, ceramic art and travelling.

It can’t be true because the highest decision making body of our party ruled in January, 2020 that there will be no parliamentary primaries in Ayawaso West Wougon for the December, 2020 election. Hon Lydia Alhassan was decleared the party’s candidate for the 2020 general election in December.
