Afrobarometer report: Unemployment, education major concerns for Ghana’s youth
For most Ghanaian youth, unemployment and education remain the most important problems, the latest Afrobarometer report has said.
Afrobarometer, in its recent survey released on International Youth Day, revealed that these two are the topmost problems the youthful populace wants the government to address.
Also, six in 10 Ghanaians said they “somewhat support” or “strongly support” higher taxes to fund programs that will help the youth.
“Job creation and education are also citizens’ top priorities for additional government investment in youth development, and citizens are willing to pay more taxes to support programs to help young people,” the report said.
Ghanaians between the ages of 18 and 35 were surveyed, 39% of the respondents chose unemployment, while 38% said education was their main concern.
When asked why it was so important to address these two sectors. The common reason was “to find work and escape poverty.”
The report also suggested that Africa’s youthful population is a tale of two perspectives — one seeing an enormous resource with almost unlimited potential, the other a ticking time bomb if the continent fails to build structures to support the economy.
But for adults, the challenges are different, addressing the issue of infrastructure is something they have been battling with over the years.
