Afenyo-Markin praises Ato Forson for leading a resilient Minority in 8th Parliament
The Majority Leader of the 8th Parliament, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has lauded the Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, for his strong leadership of a resilient and determined opposition caucus.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin’s comments came during his final address to the House ahead of the dissolution of the 8th Parliament on January 6.
Reflecting on their working relationship, Mr. Afenyo-Markin shared several personal anecdotes that underscored the steadfast nature of Dr. Forson’s leadership.
He recounted how Dr. Forson, while always polite in conversation, was known for his unwavering stance on critical issues.
“Mr. Speaker, Ato Forson would speak to you calmly, but he would call you at 5 a.m. and say, ‘Kwamena, no deal. The political committee of our party has opposed it,'” Mr. Afenyo-Markin said, illustrating Forson’s firm approach in negotiations and decision-making within the Minority.
The Majority Leader admitted that engaging with the minority was often a challenging task.
“Mr. Speaker, the Minority were tough, stubborn, and difficult. You could never strike a deal with them because they were constantly seeking power, and I understand that,” Mr. Afenyo-Markin remarked, acknowledging the high-stakes political dynamics at play in the Parliament.
Despite the occasional tensions between the Majority and Minority, Afenyo-Markin emphasised a deep sense of respect for Dr. Forson’s leadership.
His comments reflected an appreciation for the vital role the Minority played in ensuring rigorous debate, accountability, and oversight in the legislative process.
Afenyo-Markin’s tribute to Ato Forson captured the intense yet necessary relationship between the two sides, highlighting how their political differences ultimately contributed to a more dynamic and engaged parliamentary session.
