AFCON 2021: Comoros coach Amir Abdou reacts after draw
Comoros national team head coach Amir Abdou has reacted to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) draw which saw his team placed in the same group with African giants Ghana and Morroco as well as 2017 host Gabon.
According to Abdou, his side was not lucky in the draw held in the Cameroonian capital of Yaounde on Tuesday evening even though it was expected and had promised his team will do their best when the tournament finally kicks off in January.
He also went ahead to downplay the issue of big names in football and insists they will be vigilant against all the tough sides they come up against.
“We knew we were in Hat 4, and then you had to expect a tough draw. After all the teams that are present at this competition, they are part of the best African teams.” Abdou stated after the draw
“It is true that the draw is not lenient for us, even though we have already met Morocco, Gabon and Ghana in recent years. It went pretty well with us. But here it will be on neutral ground, it is up to us to be efficient and to be vigilant in all areas. Afterwards, it’s a great pleasure to be at this competition, and we will do everything to be up to the event,” He added.
The tiny Comoros Islands, who are debutants will open their AFCON campaign with a game against Gabon before Morocco and Ghana respectively.
Prior to the draw, Comoros had made history in the qualifying stages, having accrued nine points from five games, and qualified from Group G alongside Egypt with a game to spare.
They qualified for the African Cup of Nations for the first time with an unbeaten home record and even managed a 0-0 draw against the most successful team at the AFCON, Egypt at the qualifying stages.
