Ada chiefs urge Akufo-Addo, Mahama to resolve Songor lagoon tensions

The Ada Community Chiefs Association has called on President Akufo-Addo and President-elect John Mahama to intervene urgently in escalating tensions over the Songor Lagoon salt mining concession.

The plea follows a violent clash on December 23, 2024, in Bonikofe, Ada East District, which left two men critically injured.

At a press conference, the Chiefs condemned the incident, labelling it a “politically motivated” attack aimed at discrediting Electrochem Ghana Limited, the company overseeing the concession.

They raised concerns that the unrest could jeopardize Electrochem Ghana’s lease agreement under the incoming government.

Nene Dameseo III, spokesperson for the association, accused certain individuals within the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of orchestrating the violence.

He alleged that agitators deliberately damaged infrastructure, including evaporators restored by Electrochem Ghana, to provoke security forces and destabilize the area.

“Our findings reveal a calculated effort to disrupt Ada’s peace, driven by selfish political interests,” Nene Dameseo III declared.

The Chiefs called on both the outgoing and incoming administrations to act decisively against those responsible for the unrest, warning that their actions endanger Ada’s development and stability.

“We urge the current government and President-elect Mahama’s administration to ensure justice is served. The peace and progress of Ada depend on it,” he concluded.
