Acting IGP interdicts two Police Officers for torturing man in custody
The acting Inspector General of Police, James Oppong-Boanuh has directed the interdiction of two police officers who were spotted in a viral video torturing a man in custody.
General Sergeant Patrick Amoako and General Lance Corporal Isaac Marfo were seen using belts to beat a man accused by his employer of stealing GH¢1,600.
The decision comes in the wake of a trending video on social media where two police officers, Sergeant Patrick Amoako and Lance Corporal Isaac Marfo of the Railways Police Station at Kofridua in the Eastern region, tortured a gentleman in a room.
The video which went viral on Tuesday, October 1, 2019, shows a handcuffed victim being lashed with tyre strips by two police officers after they douse him with a liquid suspected to be ‘hot water.The video, said to have been shot by the complainant, has stirred public outrage regarding the maltreatment of the suspect by the police officers.
“The Police Administration is urging the public to exercise caution in the spreading of the video since the Police has begun investigation into the case,” a statement from the Public Affairs Directorate of the Ghana Police Service said.
