Tyrone Marhguy, the Rastafarian student who faced rejection from Achimota Senior High School(SHS) due to his dreadlocks, has scored 8As in the 2023 edition of the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

Marhguy, along with another Rastafarian student, Oheneba Nkrabea faced initial rejection in 2021, sparking a nationwide discourse on religious freedom and individual rights.

After weeks of uncertainty and a legal battle that reached the Human Rights Court, the court ordered Achimota School to admit both Rastafarian students, emphasizing the protection of their fundamental human rights.

In May 2021, the Human Rights Court’s ruling emphasized the importance of upholding individual rights and rejected the notion of limiting access to education based on appearance or religious beliefs.

Later on, Marhguy found himself not only accepted into Achimota School but also participating in the 2023 National Science and Math Quiz as a member of the school’s team.

The latest chapter in Marhguy’s journey is one of academic excellence. The WASSCE results reveal a stellar performance, with Marhguy scoring A1 in all subjects he undertook. This achievement not only showcases his dedication and intelligence but also serves as a testament to the power of resilience and determination.

West African Examinations Council(WAEC) released the provisional results for the 2023 West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE) on Monday, December 19, 2023.

According to WAEC, this is the best result in the last four years from 2020 to 2023, per the performance statistics.

Meanwhile, the results of 4,878 candidates have been blocked for failing to return learning support materials supplied to them by their schools and such candidates are to contact their schools, WAEC said in a statement.

WAEC has cautioned all its stakeholders to be wary of fraudsters who promise to upgrade results for a fee.

“Candidates are to note that WAEC results are secured and can be authenticated using its results verification system. The WAEC QR code can be downloaded and used to verify results”.
