Accra Sports Stadium issues resolved – Sports Ministry to CAF

The Ministry of Youth and Sports has urged the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to request an inspection of the Accra Sports and University of Ghana Stadiums by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

This move follows CAF’s decision to ban the Baba Yara Stadium from hosting international matches due to its poor condition, prompting Ghana to seek alternative venues.

The Accra Sports Stadium, which has faced scrutiny in the past, has seen many of the issues identified by CAF during previous inspections resolved.

The University of Ghana Stadium, which has already hosted CAF Category 2 matches, has not yet been inspected by CAF’s independent inspectors for consideration as a Category 3 venue, as per CAF’s regulations.

The Sports Ministry highlighted the improvements made at the Accra Sports Stadium and emphasised that the University of Ghana Stadium is ready for assessment.

“Most issues identified by CAF at the Accra Sports Stadium during a previous inspection have been resolved; while the University of Ghana Stadium has already hosted CAF Category 2 matches, but the stadium, since inauguration, is yet to be inspected by CAF’s independent inspectors for consideration as a suitable category 3 match venue, in accordance with CAF’s Stadium Regulations,” part of the statement read.

The Ministry believes that either venue could be approved to host Ghana’s next crucial match against Sudan in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
