Accra Sports Stadium approval is just for one match – Randy Abbey

Executive Council Member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Dr. Randy Abbey, has revealed that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) approved the Accra Sports Stadium to be only used for Ghana’s AFCON 2025 qualifier against Sudan on October 11, 2024.

Ghana, which had been using the Baba Yara Stadium for its home games, was forced to switch venues after CAF revoked the stadium’s license following crowd disturbances during Ghana’s defeat to Angola in Kumasi.

As a result, swift renovations at the Accra Sports Stadium were necessary to meet CAF’s requirements.

Dr. Abbey explained that while the Black Stars are relieved to be playing in Accra, there is still work to be done to bring the stadium to an optimal standard. CAF will need to be satisfied with the improvements before any future matches can be hosted there.

“It was an approval to play the 11th of October game at the Accra Sports Stadium,” Dr. Abbey stated.

“They have indicated there are some things we need to do, even before that game, and the approval is just for that game. CAF must be satisfied before we are allowed to play subsequent games.”

Despite the challenges, Dr. Abbey expressed relief that the Black Stars will be able to play their home match in Ghana and urged the team to focus on securing a win.
