Accra Academy Senior High School (SHS) has been plunged into darkness over outstanding bills owed to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
The campus was enveloped in total darkness around 8:40 pm on Monday, February 19, 2024, forcing students to rely on torchlights for studying.
Despite efforts to resolve the issue, including negotiations and reminders from the utility company, the arrears remained unpaid, leading to the disconnection.
ECG’s External Communications Director, Laila Abubakari, confirmed the disconnection, citing the school’s failure to settle its outstanding debts since June 2023.
According to Madam Abubakari, the school owes over GH¢480,000.
“Although the school is still in darkness, conversations are ongoing to ensure they are reconnected as soon as possible. What we need now, is an assurance of payment as soon as possible. The paying agency would have to make a case for them.
“We are not doing this because we are insensitive. There is a docket that the national task force works with and wherever they find themselves they do the disconnection,” she said in a Joynews interview monitored by theghanareport.com.
She stressed the need for timely payment to ensure continuous access to electricity services.
It will be recalled that a similar situation happened at Mfantsiman Girls’ Secondary School in the Central Region in April 2023. ECG disconnected the administration block and master’s bungalows.
ECG has been on a mission to recover unpaid bills from customers across the country.
The exercise has seen the disconnection of customers who have failed to pay their bills, including some government institutions. The company has urged customers to settle their bills to avoid disconnection.
