The National Under 20 Women’s Football Team of Ghana, the Black Princesses, has clinched gold in the ongoing 2023 African Games.
The team managed to make a comeback to secure a 2-1 win over its arch-rival Nigeria in the finals of the women’s football.
This edition marked the first time Ghana hosted the event and the Black Princesses contributed to the country’s medal tally at the Games by clinching a significant victory in front of a packed Cape Coast Stadium.
Despite Ghana goalkeeper Afi Amenyeku’s howler that put Nigeria in the lead in the 23rd minute, Ghana managed to equalize the match through Tracey Twum in the 78th minute sending the game to a draw after 90 minutes.
The game had to be decided at extra time, where Mukarama Abdulai scored the winning goal to secure the gold medal for Ghana.
During the early stages of the competition, Ghana’s team struggled and even received boos from fans, however, Abdulai stepped up for her team just as she did, scoring in the semifinals against Senegal and then again in the final against Nigeria.
Additionally, Black Princesses’ head coach, Yussif Basigi, achieved his second African Games gold medal, after leading Ghana’s Senior Women’s Football Team, the Black Queens, to first place at the 2015 edition.
Ghana is aiming for a repeat gold medal win as the National Under 20 Men’s Football Team, the Black Satellites- take on Uganda in the final on Friday, March 22 at the Accra Sports Stadium at 20:00 GMT.
