A 20-year-old labourer, Silas Owusu, has been remanded in police custody by the Nkawie Circuit Court over charges of unlawful firearm possession and threatening to kill another person at Abuakwa in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality.

Owusu appeared before the court, presided over by Mr Robert Addo, and pleaded not guilty to both charges.

The court subsequently ordered that he be held in custody and reappear on January 9, 2026, as investigations continue.

According to the prosecution, both the complainant, Kwadwo Addo, and the accused live in the same Abuakwa community.

On December 21, 2025, at about 4:00 pm, Addo was heading towards the Abuakwa palace when he came across Owusu involved in a physical confrontation with a neighbour.

Concerned about the situation, he intervened to calm tensions and separate the two.

Police Chief Inspector Evans Ayimbisa told the court that Owusu became upset after the intervention and allegedly attempted to attack Addo with a piece of wood.

Addo managed to escape, leaving the object behind. Moments later, when he returned to the area, Owusu reportedly pulled out a locally made Brazilian pistol from his shorts and threatened to kill him.

Fearing for his life, Addo fled and reported the matter to the Abuakwa Police.

The accused was later arrested with the assistance of local youth. During police investigations, Owusu admitted the offence in his caution statement and led officers to his room, where items including a pair of scissors and a knife were retrieved.

“The accused threatened to kill the complainant after drawing a pistol,” the prosecutor told the court.

The case has drawn attention among residents, many of whom are worried about the presence of illegal weapons in the community.
