A mother has died after her son, suspected to be mentally challenged and an accomplice set their house on fire at Abuakwa Manhyia in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality of the Ashanti region.

The young man according to reports committed the atrocious crime following threats to burn his grandmother alive during an altercation.

The assemblyman of the area, Evans Opoku who confirmed the incident said the grandmother who feared for her life went to complain to the Police station.

While the grandmother was away, the young man and one other set the house on fire. Unbeknownst to them, the mother of the young man who plotted the heinous act was inside the house, leading to her untimely death.

By the time firefighters managed to control the blaze, the entire house had been razed, and the mother had perished in the fire.

“It was intentional, he was trying to burn the house and he wanted to kill his grandmother but the grandmother rushed to the police station to report the guy that the guy had threatened to kill her.

“So, what he was doing was to burn the house and the grandmother too—not knowing that the grandmother had left. So, before they realized someone was burnt it was the guy’s mother.

“They were two so the police arrested them. The police said that the two people caused the incident, so they arrested them yesterday,” the assemblyman noted in an interview monitored by The Ghana Report on Citi News.

Meanwhile, the charred body of the victim has been taken to the morgue, and the police have launched an investigation into the incident.
