A/R: Police interrogate six people following Bekwai SDA SHS disturbances
Six people including students, are currently assisting with police investigations following a disturbance that occurred over the weekend at Bekwai SDA Senior High School in the Ashanti Region.
Following the extent of injuries among the students, the Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) promptly called for an emergency meeting to tackle the growing tensions.
It is still unclear what triggered the incident on Friday, March 22, 2024, but reports say the confrontation escalated on Saturday, March, 23 when a day student allegedly mobilized members of the community to launch an attack on boarding students at the school.
The clash resulted in numerous injuries and heightened concerns among residents. A heavy police deployment showed up to restore calm.
The Public Relations Officer at the Bekwai Education Directorate, Emmanuel Abeka in an interview monitored by The Ghana Report on Asaase News, said the security council meeting was necessary to avert planned attacks.
“There was some misunderstanding between a day student and a boarder which resulted in a fight and so the day student had his friends outside and so he mobilized them to come and attack the students on Friday but when they came, they were able to attack some of the students. Immediately the administration got to know of what was happening they called in the police, and they [police] came early enough to get things under control,” Abeka narrated.
He added; “Currently they arrested one of the town folks and also some five students are being questioned. As I speak the Municipal Security Council is meeting to find a lasting solution to the matter so details of the MUSEC meeting and details of the meeting will be shared subsequently but for now, the place is calm and the students are learning. It is important to note that the strike action by the teachers cannot be linked to this development”.
